One day I woke up in my hostal in Tacna, I decide to visit Arica, northern Chile. I arrived at the border, it was a bit rusty and desolated but there was plenty of people. I looked different from most of the folks in this area, so most of them were looking at me. One of the border officer just walked up to me and said in Spanish "the there was a coup detat". I thought it was the dictator of Peru, Juan Velasco Alvarado, another common coup detat, just another day in Peru. I crossed the border into Arica, I see the chilean flag high on the mount. I looked around, eating the common food there. I enjoyed the sunset but quickly got back to the border but the chilean border side was closed, many people were waiting outside, I ask "what happened", no one knew. I then returned to Arica, I saw the flag at half-mast, barely visible because it was night time now. I noticed the coup detat was on the chilean side. I rented a hostal room there and watched the TV at the lobby. I then learned Salvador Allende, the elected president of Chile, was killed in a golpe de estado in Santiago, leaving the governmental institutions in disarray. See, I was telling the perspective of my grandfather Maximo Diaz. It's been more than forty years since this happened. My abuelo at least returned back to Tacna safely, later to Lima to visit my grandmother and his twin sons. Just two days ago I visited Tacna-Arica, where my now deceased grandfather was. Very beautiful, even more so when you learn the past of your predecessor. You get to feel this better sense of reality. The border is now very clean and organized, though mines litter the borderline. The leftovers from the Pinochet Dictatorship that still lingers today..
Very good
